The images showcase the varied scenery of the British seaside and the huge range of activities that can be enjoyed throughout the year on the beach, in and on the water, and along the cliffs, sand dunes, piers and promenades of coastline. This travel-size paperback is 8.25” x 6” (20.96 x 15.24 cm), has 41 pages and 61 photographs, including the cover. It is in landscape orientation, rather than in portrait, as this gives a fuller view of the location and activities. The photographs were taken by Sandra Morton in England and Wales at various times of the year. She has also included two black and white photos from the 1950’s that were taken whilst she was enjoying the seaside with her parents. Enjoying the Seaside will promote nostalgic conversation and bring back happy memories. It will appeal to seniors, dementia patients and invalids who may be confined indoors now but who previously lived by the coast or loved visiting the seaside on day trips or holidays. The book is ideal to use when visiting elderly family or friends in care homes or hospitals, and it also makes a great gift or Christmas stocking stuffer (there is no reference to “illness, age or cognitive impairment” inside or on the cover).
This paperback is small, light and portable, and is easily held and carried by frail hands. It resembles a children’s picture book rather than a heavy, glossy and expensive coffee table photography book which would be unwieldy for this purpose. Enjoying the Seaside is engaging and relaxing to look at, and with only 41-pages and no distracting text sections, it is not overwhelming for the viewer.
